CHAPTER 6 CHICKENING OUT

The STEM lab was almost empty when we got back. Most groups were out testing their rockets.

Lana waited at our table. “There you guys are! Did you get lost?”

Veejay plopped the box onto the table.

“The rocket was covered in dog poop,” Dominic said. “We threw it away.”

Lana frowned. “Oh.” Her eyes darted between her phone and the box. “Oh no. Well… I guess we need to build another one, then.”

She did not look happy about it.

Ella raised her eyebrows at me.

I stared at the floor.

Lana picked through the box. “We’ll need another cork. Looks like our soda bottle cracked, too. Better get a whole new box.”

“She’s going to have us make the same kind,” Dominic hissed. “Tell her now.”

“Astrid has something to say first,” Ella told Lana.

But would she still take us to Space-E if we told her we didn’t like her idea? It wasn’t fair. Why did I have to be the one to tell her? My hands started to sweat.

“Astrid?” Lana prompted. “What’s up?”

My throat went dry.

“I… I mean, we…” I swallowed. “We just wanted to say…”

Lana’s forehead crinkled. I knew she didn’t have tons of free time. In my head I saw the doors to Space-E closing. There would be no one there to let me in. No tour. Nothing.

“We think… you’re doing a great job,” I blurted.

Dominic groaned. Ella narrowed her eyes at me.

But Lana’s face relaxed. “Whew!” she said. “I was afraid you were going to say something else.”

“Yeah… like the truth,” Ella muttered.

“I’ll get us a new box,” I said, jumping up before any of them could argue.

“Thanks, Astrid.” Lana winked. “I knew you were a keeper.”
